I’m trying something a little different, branching out if you will, so sit back and have a read of of my thoughts on the Kingsman.
From the director of X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn, comes the spy movie that I’ve been waiting for Bond to do for the last decade.
Let me take a moment to explain that last sentence, I’ve felt disappointed by the Bond films of the last decade, they have changed from the classic Bond movies with over the top evil mad men with enormous mountain top lairs and world conquering ambitions; instead we get something darker and gritter with bad guys cast in shades of grey, rather than the world being the black and white of old. Now don’t get me wrong I’m under no illusion that the world is made up of good and bad guys with nothing in-between, but there’s something to be said for the old days of the early Bond films, put simply they were fun.
Now Kingsman has managed to gather together the major elements of the classic Bond films, an evil bad guy with way too much money, a secretive organization dedicated to prevent the world falling into anarchy, very much black and white. These elements on there own though don’t make a good movie, the latter Brosnan had these elements in abundance and still managed to make a mess.
What separates Kingsman is it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it makes fun of Bond and other spy series’s on a regular basis drawing attention to the old cliches and having some fun at there expense, now some of you may be thinking at this stage this might be some sort of Austin Powers movie… well it isn’t, thank god.
While yes it is fun it also has a serious core to the story that drives the idea that you are in charge of your own destiny; I will admit at several points I was surprised by the depth which on the surface looks like just another mindless spy action movie to the point that I could actually tolerate the main character being a chav for the first half of the movie. I like movies that surprise me, so if you get a chance I highly recommend you go and see the Kingsman.
Or if I haven’t convinced you have a watch of the trailer below.
